There are times that blood sugars are high in the morning as a result of diet and lack of exercise. However, there are other causes, such as, the liver "over working" during the night and also the SOMOGYI effect. The Somogyi effect occurs when there is a low blood sugar level around 3-4 am followed by a rise in blood sugar level in the early hours of awakening.
